Official Statements

Official Statement on the Nomination of Betsy DeVos:
As GSAFE's mandate is supporting LGBTQIA youth and creating safe educational spaces for all youth, we feel we must speak out against the nomination of Betsy DeVos, president-elect Trump's pick for Secretary of Education. Ms. DeVos does not hold an education degree, has never worked for a school in any capacity, and has never had any of her children attend a public school. She and her family have championed causes that undermine our most vulnerable students, including LGBTQIA students, such as: funding the fight against marriage equality, supporting Focus on the Family- a group that promotes "conversion therapy" for gay youth, and lobbying for laws that drain resources from public schools under the guise of school choice.

How will we know that Betsy DeVos will ensure that LGBTQIA students are safe and affirmed in all schools? Until she is able to answer that question, GSAFE cannot support her nomination for Secretary of Education.

Official Statement on the Removal of LGBT from Whitehouse.gov

In the change from the Obama administration to the Trump administration, the removal of LGBT as a searchable term on whitehouse.gov (as well as the civil rights, health care, climate change, and the violence against women fact sheet) sends a message about the priorities of the current president.  While Trump's LGBTQ views have been unclear during the election cycle, Mike Pence's were completely clear.  LGBTQIA youth and their allies are rightly concerned to see the representation of their existence vanish so quickly from the official White House website.

LGBTQIA youth are important and deserve to have their issues addressed by their government.
